7 Things to Check Before Installing iOS and iPadOS 2

iOS and iPadOS 27 are expected this fall, with changes to Siri, Photos, accessibility, and more. Before installing a major update, though, it is worth taking a few simple steps to make sure your iPhone or iPad is ready.

This is especially important if you have an older device, limited storage, or photos and information you simply cannot afford to lose. A little preparation now can make the update much less stressful later.

What You’ll Learn

  • Confirm device compatibility, but do not expect every supported iPhone or iPad to receive every feature.
  • Make a fresh iCloud backup and confirm iCloud Photos synchronization before installing a major update.
  • Free storage carefully by removing downloads, attachments, and unused apps before deleting meaningful photos.
  • Update essential apps and install iOS 27 only when you have reliable Wi-Fi, power, and time.

1. Check Whether Your iPhone or iPad Supports iOS 27

The first question is whether your device can install the update at all. If you are not sure which iPhone or iPad you own, you can find out in Settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Look for the model name near the top of the screen.

The About screen is the easiest place to confirm exactly which iPhone you have.

An iPhone 11 or newer should be able to install iOS 27. For iPad, check the model name and compare it with Apple’s supported-device information when the update is released.

There is an important difference between a device being able to install iOS or iPadOS 27 and receiving every advertised feature. Some of the newer Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. On iPad, those features require an M1 chip or newer.

Please do not feel that you need a new iPhone simply because one particular new feature is unavailable. Your current iPhone or iPad may still do everything you need perfectly well.

2. Skip the Beta Versions

You may see people using iOS 27 before the public release. Those early versions are beta software, meaning they are unfinished versions released for testing.

Beta software can have bugs, make apps behave unexpectedly, and drain the battery faster. That may be acceptable on a spare device, but it is usually not a good idea for the iPhone or iPad you rely on every day.

If beta updates appear in your Software Update settings, leave that option turned off. There is no prize for being first. A dependable iPhone is far more valuable.

3. Install the Current Available Update First

Before iOS or iPadOS 27 arrives, make sure your device is running the latest version currently available for it. These smaller updates often include valuable security protections and bug fixes, so there is no need to wait for the next major release to keep your device protected.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. Read the available update information and install it when you have time.

Checking Software Update now helps ensure your device has the latest current fixes before the major update arrives.

If an update is available, it is fine to set aside a calm time to install it. You do not need to do it in a hurry.

4. Make a Fresh iCloud Backup

This may be the most important step of all. An iPhone or iPad update normally installs without affecting your information, but a recent backup gives you a way to recover your data if something unexpected happens.

To check your iCloud backup settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Scroll down and tap iCloud Backup.

Make sure Backup This iPhone is on, then use Back Up Now if the most recent backup is not current.

Make sure Backup This iPhone is switched on. You can also decide whether to allow backups over cellular data. On this page, you will see the date and time of the latest backup.

If it has not backed up recently, connect your device to dependable Wi-Fi and power, then tap Back Up Now. Keep it connected to Wi-Fi until the backup is complete.

Do not forget iCloud Photos

If you use iCloud Photos, your photos synchronize with iCloud separately from the regular device backup. Before updating, make sure photo synchronization has had time to finish as well.

Do not skip this step. Check your backup again immediately before installing iOS or iPadOS 27.

5. Check Your Available Storage

Your iPhone or iPad needs enough free storage to download and install a major update. The exact amount of storage required for iOS and iPadOS 27 may vary, so there is no single number you need to aim for. Your device will tell you if more room is needed.

To see what is using your storage:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap iPhone Storage or iPad Storage.
  4. Wait briefly while the device calculates your storage use.

The storage screen shows what is taking up space and offers sensible recommendations before you start removing anything.

If storage is nearly full, begin with items that are easy to replace or no longer useful:

  • Downloaded movies and television programs
  • Old podcast episodes
  • Large message attachments
  • Apps you no longer use

Do not begin randomly deleting important photos. Start with the simple items first, and only remove photos after you are certain they are safely synchronized or backed up.

6. Know Your Device Passcode and Apple Account Information

Before updating, make sure you know your device passcode. This is usually the four or six digit number entered when Face ID or Touch ID does not work.

Your device passcode may be needed during the update process, even when Face ID normally handles sign-in.

Your device passcode is not necessarily the same as your Apple Account password. The update may ask for the device passcode, and some Apple services may ask you to sign in again afterward.

If you are uncertain about your Apple Account password, sort that out before beginning the update. Changing passwords while a major software update is installing is a situation nobody needs.

7. Update Your Apps and Choose a Calm Time

Before installing iOS or iPadOS 27, update your apps. App developers often release updates to ensure their apps work properly with the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
  3. Pull down to refresh the list of available updates.
  4. Tap Update All.

Updating all apps before a major iOS release gives essential apps their best chance of working smoothly afterward.

Pay particular attention to apps you depend on, including:

  • Banking apps
  • Health and medication apps
  • Hearing aid apps
  • Password managers
  • Authentication apps

Do not update at an inconvenient moment

When iOS and iPadOS 27 become available, choose a calm time. Do not begin the update immediately before traveling, leaving home, attending an important appointment, or going into a meeting.

Connect to reliable Wi-Fi, plug your iPhone or iPad into power, and allow plenty of time. You do not have to install the update the moment it appears.

If your iPhone is essential for a medical device, hearing aid, or another important accessory, it may be sensible to wait a few days and confirm that the related app is compatible. But do not postpone the update indefinitely. Once you have a fresh backup and your important apps are ready, keeping your device updated is an important part of keeping it secure.

Your iOS and iPadOS 27 Preparation Checklist

Before tapping install, work through this simple checklist:

  1. Confirm which iPhone or iPad you own and whether it supports the update.

2. Remember that not every supported device receives every new feature.

3. Avoid the beta version on your everyday device.

4. Install the latest currently available iOS or iPadOS update.

5. Make a fresh iCloud backup and confirm your photos have synchronized.

6. Check that you have enough available storage.

7. Know your device passcode and Apple Account password.

8. Update your apps and choose a convenient, unhurried time to install.

Taking these steps means you can approach iOS or iPadOS 27 with much more confidence. Your information is protected, your important apps are ready, and your iPhone or iPad has the best possible chance of updating smoothly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I install the iOS 27 beta on my regular iPhone?

No. Beta software is unfinished and can contain bugs, affect app performance, or drain battery life more quickly. It is best to wait for the finished public version on a device you depend on.

Will iOS 27 erase my photos?

A normal update should not erase your photos or information, but making a current backup before a major update is essential. If you use iCloud Photos, also make sure synchronization is complete.

How do I check how much storage my iPhone has available?

Go to Settings, tap General, then tap iPhone Storage. Your iPhone will calculate what is using space and show recommendations for freeing storage if needed.

Should I install iOS 27 immediately when it appears?

Not necessarily. Choose a calm time with dependable Wi-Fi, power, and enough time for the process. If you rely on apps for a hearing aid, medical device, or another essential accessory, consider waiting briefly to confirm compatibility.
