Location Services on your iPhone can be incredibly useful. It helps Maps give directions, tells Weather what to show, and lets Health and fitness apps track walks. But if apps you do not need are watching your location, it can feel intrusive and can shorten battery life.
“How much location access should you give? How much should you hold back?”
What are Location Services and why they matter
Location Services lets apps know where you are so they can do their job. The trade off is between convenience and privacy. By controlling which apps can access location, you keep apps that need it working properly while stopping others from tracking you or draining battery unnecessarily.
Turn off Location Services completely (when you want full privacy)
If you want no apps to know your location, you can turn Location Services off entirely. Be aware that apps like Maps, Find My, and Weather may not work correctly when Location Services is off.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Privacy or Privacy & Security depending on your iOS version.
- Tap Location Services.
- Toggle Location Services off and confirm by tapping Turn Off.
Better approach: customize location access per app
Most people find it smarter to leave Location Services on and choose which apps can use it. That way, important apps get access when needed while other apps do not.
From Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services you will see a list of apps. Each app shows one of the options such as Never, Ask Next Time, While Using the App, or Always. You can tap an app to change its setting.
Examples of sensible choices
- Maps: While Using the App with Precise Location enabled gives accurate navigation and turn by turn directions.
- Health or Fitness apps: While Using the App with Precise Location on lets them track walks or routes when you want that data.
- Bank app: Never is a good choice. Banks rarely need your location and turning it off protects privacy.
Share My Location and Find My
You can also control whether you share your location with family members and whether Find My iPhone is enabled. Find My iPhone should remain on so you can locate a lost device. The Share My Location switch controls whether people in Family Sharing or individual contacts can see where you are.
To manage sharing:
- Open Location Services and tap Share My Location.
- Toggle Share My Location off if you do not want anyone to see your location.
- To allow a specific person to see you, turn Share My Location on for that individual in the People section of the Find My app.
What is Precise Location?
Precise Location is a per-app setting. If Precise Location is off, an app only sees your approximate area rather than your exact spot. This is useful for privacy, but when you are using navigation you will usually want Precise Location on for apps like Maps.
Quick troubleshooting and upkeep
- If your battery is draining quickly or you see an arrow in the status bar that means Location Services is being used. Check which apps are accessing location and whether they need to.
- Revisit your Location Services settings every few months. Apps update, you install new apps, and your needs may change.
Why take the time to manage Location Services
Controlling location access gives you:
- More privacy and fewer apps tracking your every move.
- Better battery life because GPS is used less often.
- Peace of mind because you know exactly which apps can see where you are.
Spending a few minutes to set Location Services the way you want will make your iPhone safer, more efficient, and easier to use. Check your settings now and again to stay in control.
Final tip
Keep Find My iPhone on in case you lose your device. For everything else, choose the level of access that matches the app and how much privacy you prefer.
